Nina Roz, whose real name is Nina Kankunda, is a Ugandan singer, model, and fashionista who does ragga, afro dancehall, and afro-pop.
When she got into the music business in 2016, she was friends with a Ugandan record label called Team No Sleep, or TNS for short. TNS helped her record her first single before she went out on her own.
Education and Background of Nina Roz
Nina Kankunda, who is better known by her stage name Nina Roz, was born in Mbarara, Uganda, in July 1993 to Mr. Matia Nsemeirwe Martin and Proscovia Tumukunde. She grew up in Kampala.
Nina Roz says that her mother gave her the name Kakunda, which makes most people think she is from western Uganda. However, Nina says that her father is from Rwanda and that she is also a Rwandan by birth. Kankunda is her parents' only child, but she has step-siblings on both sides of the family.
The beautiful, tall, and talented diva went to Entebbe Kisuggu's St. Steven's Church of Uganda when she first started school. After she finished primary school, she went to Kakungulu Memorial. Later, she switched schools and went to Kibuli SS, which is also a Muslim school. She finished secondary school at Mitiyana Trinity College.
Nina Roz was small, thin, and beautiful. She went to East African University to get a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, but she never got to finish because of money problems.
Nina Roz's stepfather, Hajji Gita Sulaiman, was the backbone of the family and paid Nina Roz's tuition. When Nina first started college, he got sick and could no longer pay for her, so she dropped out and went into the music business.
Nina Roz took part in singing and dancing competitions when she was in primary and secondary school, and she says she was always a leader with a position in both.
Nina Roz says that when she was in school, she got along better with boys than with girls, and she called herself a "tomboy."
Nina Roz – A career in fashion
Nina Kakunda, also known as Nina Roz, became a model during her s.6 break. Nina's unique height of over 6 feet made most modeling agencies want to use her in their projects.
Career in music
In her secondary years (s.4 and s.6), Nina Roz met Empress, who was the best ragga female dancehall artist at the time. She became Empress's backup artist and performed at most of her gigs and beach parties.
After dropping out of college, Kakunda joined the groups of girls who were slaying and partying in Kampala's best clubs at the time. There, she met friends who were important in the music industry.
On a Saturday morning, Nina's friend Davido invited her to go on a boat cruise. While on the cruise, Nina Roz met a woman named Sheebah Karungi, whose song "Ice Cream" was the most popular song in town at the time. Nina says that the day she met Sheebah Karungi, her life changed.
Nina says that she meant Sheebah when she was feeling sad and angry, but Sheebah helped her get through it.
Nina later flew to South Africa to look for work. While she was there, she realized that music was the only thing she could do.
After a month, Nina went back to Uganda and talked to Sheeba's manager, Jeff Kiwa, about wanting to sing. Jeff Kiwa took her to the studio to make her first demo so he could see if she could sing. Nina says that the demo was a success, but it wasn't released for reasons that aren't clear. In September 2016, Jeff Kiwa took her to a producer named Shidy Beats. Shidy Beats made her first single, Oli Mekete, which she and Roden Y Kabako worked on together.
After the song came out, a video producer named Grate Make asked her to make her first video. The video came out in October 2016.
Jeff Kiwa told Nina Roz that he couldn't manage her, but he suggested that she get a sponsor instead of a manager. Nina thought this was a good thing because Jeff had taught her how the music business works and who the important people are.
Nina Roz was signed to Boom Bark Records in 2017. At the beginning of that year, she worked with Daddy Andre to make her second club hit, Omuliro, an Afro-DanDancehall song. Later in 2018, she put out another single called "Olumya Banno," which was made by "Nessim Pan Production." In 2019, she put out a dancehall song called "Anayinama."
Nina Roz left Boom Bark Records in 2020 and started working with Sure Events. Her two most recent singles, Ntinka Nkutike and Ekyoyoyo, were produced by Diggy Baur and Daddy Andre.
Kakunda is known for her soft, sweet, silky voice and her videos, which are unique because they are creative and follow the latest fashion trends.
