Clever J
Gerald Muwonge, also known as Clever J, is a Ugandan recording artist, producer, arranger, and composer. His song "Wanzi Wanani," which came out in 2007, made a big splash on the music scene in the early 2000s.
Clever J, whose real name is Joseph Mayanja and whose voice sounds a lot like that of his cousin Jose Chameleone, became famous after the song "Manzi Wanani" came out in 2007.
How I grew up and went to school
Clever J was born in Uganda to Mr. John Bukenya and the late Rosemary Nalujja. He was partly raised by Gerald Mayanja and Proscovia Musoke, who are Jose Cameleone's parents.
The deep voice went to more than one school. He went to Kasanga Victoria School for his early education. Then, to everyone's surprise, Clever J went to Jinja Kalooli Girls School, but he left in P.4, according to his story.
Then, from P.5 to P.7, he went to Holy Family School. Later, Clever J went to Standard High School Kawempe for his secondary education before going to Nagalama Islamic Institute.
Clever J had been given things by his cousins in the Mayanja family, but he lost them in a fire that destroyed the school when he was in his third year of high school. He could no longer pay for school, so that was the end of his schooling.
Career in Music
Clever J began making music in 1994. His first three songs, "Yewuwo," "Sirina Mulala," and "Obusungu," were recorded at the Leone Island record label, which was owned by the famous musician Dr. Jose Chameleone.
Then, in 2006, he put out the hit album "Manzi Wanani," which he produced.
After that came the album "Ensi Yaleeta" and other songs until his downfall. Clever J came back to the music scene in 2020 and said that he was working on his comeback after a successful concert.
But his return to music didn't work out, and he hasn't been heard from since. Some say that Clever J has given up on music. He is said to have turned to bricklaying after failing as a musician in Buloba, which is on the edge of Kampala City.
In March 2021, his former manager MP Jesus said that Clever J had sold the studio he had set up in his home to start a welding store and become a Born Again Christian.
Clever J once said that he got into bricklaying to help him get ahead in the music business and improve his studio.
He thinks that the change in the music industry, where artists now sing more for fun than to teach their fans something, is to blame for his musical decline.
He says that the music of today doesn't last long, while music from the past does because it had a message.
Clever J also said in an interview that he had been booked for a few concerts, played, but wasn't paid, even though he used his own money to get to the venues. This also helped bring about his downfall.
Also, Clever J and Jose Chameleone made up after a long fight at a comedy show he did after being out of the music scene for many years. The show was put on by Alex Muhangi, a Ugandan comedian and owner of Comedy Store Uganda.
Chameleone, who accepted the apology, said that Clever J was a talented musician who had made a real difference in Uganda's music business.
They stopped seeing each other after he had a fight with the Mayanja family.

Controversy
Gerald Mayanja and Proscovia Musoke, the parents of superstar Chameleone, helped raise Clever J after they became famous. He cut himself off from the Mayanja family until his music went downhill, which made the family angry.
Then, 15 years later, in 2020, Clever J went to see the Mayanja family to say sorry for what had happened and get their blessing again.
