How I grew up and went to school
Edrisah Musuuza, which is what Eddy Kenzo's real name is, was born in Uganda, in the city of Masaka.
When he was 4 or 5 years old, his mother died, and he spent the next 13 years mostly living on the streets of Masaka and Kampala. [1] Kenzo wanted to be a professional football player at first, so he joined the Masaka Local Council FC's camp when he was 9 years old. He later got a sports scholarship to go to Kampala's Lubiri Secondary School, but he never finished school.
Career: In 2008, Kenzo started making music under the name Eddy Kenzo. In that same year, he and Mikie Wine put out their first song, "Yannimba." In 2010, he put out another single called "Stamina." During the 2011 Ugandan general election, many politicians used the song as their theme song. At the Pearl of Africa Music Awards in 2011, Kenzo won the award for Best New Artist. [8] Early on in his career, Kenzo also set up his own record label, Big Talent Entertainment. He is still a part of that group.
In 2012, Kenzo kept putting out new music.
In 2013, he put on his first show at the Kyadondo Rugby Club to promote the song "Kamunguluze."
In 2014, Kenzo's song "Sitya Loss" and the album of the same name were his first big international hits. In September 2014, record executive Sean Combs posted a link to a YouTube video of a group of Ugandan children called the Ghetto Kids dancing to the song. The video quickly went viral. As of March 2022, nearly 42 million people have watched the video on YouTube. Kenzo also started a petition to get the kids on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. [7] [13] [14] After "Sitya Loss" and the album of the same name came out, Kenzo and DeMarco went on a short tour of the United States. [15]
Kenzo and Akon both sang at the opening ceremonies of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, which was held in Equatorial Guinea in January
He also did a show at the end of the tournament. Around that time, he made a remix of his 2014 single "Jambole," in which Nigerian singer Kcee was a guest. [18] Kenzo won the "Viewer's Choice Best New International Artist" BET Award in June 2015. He was the first artist from East Africa to win any kind of BET Award. In July 2015, he played at a music festival in the capital of Rwanda. In October of that year, he put out a new version of his song "Mbilo Mbilo" that Niniola sang on. Queen of Katwe, which came out in 2016, had the original version of that song on its soundtrack.
In December 2015, Kenzo put out the first single from his second album, Zero to Hero. It was called "Soraye."
In March 2016, he went on an African tour that took him to Kenya, the Ivory Coast, Mali, and other places. He put out Zero to Hero at the end of that month. Throughout the rest of 2016, Kenzo wrote lyrics for Jidenna's "Little Bit More," was featured on the Mi Casa single "Movie Star," and won an All Africa Music Award for his "Mbilo Mbilo" remix. He also did another tour of the US at the end of the year. [31] In May of 2017, Kenzo was named ambassador of the Kenyan Tourism Board[32]. The following year, he was given a similar job in Uganda.
