DJ Shiru, known as the 256 Spin Doctor, is a renowned Ugandan disc jockey (DJ) recognized as one of the top three celebrated DJs in both Uganda and East Africa.
Shiru embarked on his DJing odyssey at the tender age of 17, under the tutelage of his brother, DJ Rota, a prominent figure in Uganda's DJ scene during the early 2000s. Notably, DJ Rota was instrumental in fostering the career of Red Banton. Shiru made his debut at the Pearl of Africa Music Awards, an annual event held in Uganda.
As the founder and CEO of Shirumatic Pro, a promotions company he established, Shiru actively engages in branding and promoting his ventures. He has curated numerous international shows, featuring acclaimed artists such as R. Kelly, Sean Kingston, Sean Paul, and UB40.
In addition to his thriving DJ career, Shiru has ventured into radio hosting, commencing at Dembe FM before transitioning to Bukedde Radio. Early Life and Education:
Born Kiberu Bashir in Masaka Nyendo, DJ Shiru spent his formative years in the city of Nyendo. He draws inspiration from his brother, DJ Rota, whose prominence in the DJing realm motivated Shiru to pursue a similar path.
Shiru commenced his educational journey at Buwaala Primary School, a government institution where education was provided free of charge. However, due to financial constraints, he couldn't pursue his secondary education extensively. At the age of 16, he relocated to Kampala to join his brother, Rota, who was a prominent DJ in the city at the time. Despite initially aspiring to be a footballer and being deeply passionate about soccer, Shiru shifted his focus to DJing when his football dreams didn't materialize.
DJ Career:
Shiru embarked on his DJ career at the age of 17 under the guidance of his brother, DJ Rota, who was considered one of Kampala's finest DJs. He gained recognition in 2006 after his debut performance at the prestigious Pearl of Africa Music Awards, solidifying his status as one of Uganda's top DJs. Over the years, Shiru has had the privilege of hosting numerous international artists in Uganda, including Sean Paul, Sean Kingston, R. Kelly, UB40, and many others. He has also collaborated with various local talents such as Radio and Weasel, Bebe Cool, Chameleone, and more.
In 2008, Shiru began hosting the Saturday show "Dance Party" on Dembe FM, later joining Bukedde Radio and becoming an official DJ for Bukedde TV. Additionally, he established Shirmatic Pro, a record label where he not only records music but also signs artists and manages branding initiatives. Despite encountering disagreements, such as the fallout with Mowzey Radio and Weasel over the song "Mr DJ," Shiru has remained influential in Uganda's music scene.
