King Michael
King Michael, whose real name is Michael Mugwanya, is a Ugandan dancehall musician and former DJ. He was born on September 15, 1979, at Nsambya Hospital and is the firstborn in a family of six children. His parents are Charles Katatumba and Betty Kisitu. Due to financial difficulties, he dropped out of school and started selling charcoal before becoming a DJ at Lido Beach.
Initially known as DJ Michael, he transitioned into music after releasing his breakthrough song Wandekera Omwana in 2006. He later rebranded as King Michael in 2013 to avoid confusion with his DJ past. Over the years, he has been a major figure in Uganda’s dancehall scene, releasing hit songs such as Kwata Kwata and Muko Muko. He considers himself a legend in Uganda’s music industry due to his extensive catalog of dancehall hits.
Beyond music, King Michael is also involved in politics and is a supporter of Uganda’s ruling party, NRM. He is married to Rhona Ndagire, with whom he has two children. His contributions to Ugandan music earned him the Hi Skool Awards' Artist of the Year title in 2011
